The Kit-Kat debate
Little did we realise when the project started, the practical implications of recreating a 1930’s camp, and as time went on we realised that we had to be realistic about what could be achieved.
“Its was an interesting debate, also it made us think about how far we were going to go in the re-enactment of the camp.”- Alice
One of the interesting debates was over changes in Woodcraft folk cultural mores. In the 1930’s, as now, the Folk was concerned about children’s diet and sought to provide wholesome food to campers.
In recent years the Folk has supported the boycott of Nestle products. This includes not buying Kit-Kats. But in 1930’s Britain Kit-Kats were manufactured by Rowntree, who were not owned by Nestle. Could we include Kit-Kats on the camp menus? This led to a fierce debate over historical accuracy. Finally an unequivocal decision was made. If the menu programmers could find Kit-Kats made in the 1930’s, then they could be included on the menu!
